It’s been exactly 11 months since I made the transition from university life to working full-time. It’s exciting, what I do, and at the same time, I’ve never been challenged quite like this before. It started in Grade 11 when I was beginning to look at career choices. And the call came - to take care of patients in the hospital. Right after four years of nursing school, I applied and was accepted to a hospital.

It’s amazing - “growing up,” you know. I find entering the work force and everything that comes with it quite an adjustment. Nursing school was great but it never quite prepared me for the real world - nursing shortages, overworked staff, and constantly being surrounded by people my parents’ age or older! There were other beginnings as well - the hunt for an affordable car, paying bills, and taking on more responsibility at home. The first half year was very tough. I’d often feel behind of schedule at the moment I arrived to work because there’s just so much to accomplish. Being the new person on the job, it took time to ask for help and familiarize myself with tasks that came along.

Seeing people in suffering made me think a lot about life, it questioned my belief in a sovereign God. And after much thinking, talking to people, and praying, I’ve decided to trust God as a good God. And He really is good. During one of my night shifts on the unit I work at, I felt a need to share Jesus with an elderly Chinese lady who was dying from cancer, which had metastasized all over her body. With my limited Cantonese, I shared the four spiritual laws with her and she felt she needed Jesus as her Saviour. So we prayed for her to receive Jesus! At times like these, I really feel like a hobbit, not deserving the task nor having the strength or courage to complete it. God showed me the requirement to do His work - being available and obedient, and He’ll take care of the rest.

Since I have more days off, I’ve taken up singing lessons. It’s a blast, and I love it. I also get to hangout with my grandma a bit more, drive her to appointments or have dim sum with her. I get to spend more time at home and I realize how blessed I am to have a home and a supportive family. And of course, I must admit, shopping has never been so much fun.

Nursing (and adjusting to adulthood) is challenging. But I’m looking forward to really enjoying what I do. I already enjoy different aspects of it, but I’m in the works of cultivating the attitude of gratefulness, compassion, and confidence.
