The Call to Fast and Pray

“What if our #1 leadership strategy is to pray?” One of our Campus Alumni, Justine Hwang, and nameless others know the importance of and the reality of the kind of work it takes to engage in warfare day to day….on our knees.  God’s call to humble ourselves, seek His face and turn from our wicked ways is clear and compelling. Volunteering to engage our body in prayer through fasting IS the cutting edge for breakthrough.

If you are like me, most of the time even when I know the call is clear, the only times it compels me to my knees is when it’s convenient….until recently.  One moment I was mobile…the next, I’m not. The following weeks were peppered with trips to the clinic and lab.  In the midst of this uncertainty and pain, I am clear on one thing – prayer.  Or in my case, it’s more like…crying out to God.

While I was soliciting people to pray on my behalf, I was struck by whether there’s a sense of urgency and desperation to pray and intercede for those who are dying of a greater sickness. Who is there to appeal to God on behalf of those whose eternity is at stake?  The answer:  His people.

Corey Porter, a campus staff, is also one such person who have heard God’s call to fast and pray and is calling students at UBC to join him.  Karen Braun from Power to Change’s Breakthrough Prayer Ministry is convinced this is essential. Justine Hwang who works at Grace Vancouver is not only sounding the call to pray but equipping those who have the desire to grow in prayer and opportunity to pray rather than just talk about prayer.

You and I are called.  We have been invited as His people to come not to feast but to fast. We have been invited, as His people, to come and feast on Him through fasting.  Are you hungry?  It’s time. Are you thirsty?…. Come, drink, eat and be satisfied!  Consider the call…
